Easy method of rooftop gardening:

Although the concept of roof garden is very old, roof garden has become very popular in various cities including Dhaka in Bangladesh. A glance at the rooftops of most houses reveals a variety of gardens. But most of these gardens are unplanned. Any tree and even vegetables can be grown on the roof of the house if planned initiatives are taken.

Successful rooftop gardening requires knowing what type of soil is suitable for which plants and selecting plants that can tolerate heat or sun. In addition, other maintenance tasks must be done properly, including maintaining an adequate system of regular irrigation of the garden.

Best Roof garden plan:

Rooftop gardens are becoming increasingly popular in urban areas of Bangladesh, especially in the capital, Dhaka. Not only flowers, vegetables, fruits are also grown on the roof. Although it is not commercial, stakeholders see huge potential in this pleasure park.

Roof garden equipment:

  • A hollow roofCut drums, cement or clay tubs, plastic layers, etc
  • Bed/bed at convenient place on the roof (space should be kept between the roof and the bed);
  • Spades, shears, showers, buckets, saws, hoes, knives, hand spray machines, etc.;
  • Loamy soil, rotted dry cow dung and compost, sand and brick powder etc.;
  • Seedlings / cuttings or seeds etc.

Plants suitable for roof gardens:

The first requirement for a rooftop garden is to select plants. Trees should be taken from known, understood and trusted nurseries. While gardening on the roof, first care should be taken that the trees are not large in size i.e. small trees should be planted and hybrid fruit trees can be planted to produce more fruits, such as amrapali mango and malilka, guava, apple tree, olive, karamcha, ata. , Amra, Lemon, Pomegranate, Papaya, Malta.

Bente species are fast growing fruit trees best suited for rooftop gardens. When it comes to rooftop gardening, you should remember that if you plant from cuttings and not from seeds, you will get faster results. Different types of Guti Kalam, Chokha Kalam and Johar Kalam are available nowadays. It is good to collect seedlings from this enclosure for roof garden.

Amrapali Mango, Alphonso Mango, Katiman Mango, Thai Perennial Mango, Baromaceae creeper, Philippine Super Sweet, Rangu Eye etc. Among the lemons, paper lemon, nagpuri orange, mulberry seedling, bari-1 malta, malta, coconut lemon, Chinese orange are very good in bathtub.

Besides Cherry Chara (Indian), Chafeda, Thai Black Grape, White Grape, Red Grape, Thai Grapefruit, Pen Olive, Thailand Sweet Olive, Pen Kadbel, Pakistani Pineapple, Pomegranate, Strawberry, Baukul, Applekul, Coconut, Lychee etc. Also cultivated in Thailand are red jamrul, green drop jamrul, apple jamrul, grape guava, Thai guava, phalsa, khude jam, anshfal, zord kalam kamaranga, even rambutan kalam seedling (Malaysian lychee), litchi China-3, longan (Kathlychee), goes.

In this case, if the tree is of good quality, it will bear fruit within one year. These days high quality seedlings are coming to the country from abroad. You can collect and plant them to fill the gaps in the roof garden. Bahari jamrul, guava and safeda leaves are now available for purchase in various nurseries. The beauty of the roof garden increases if these trees and various flower seedlings are collected and planted on the roof.

Roof garden soil preparation:

A mixture of clay or sandy soil:  If your soil is clayey (hard soil), mix sand and soil. If the soil is sandy, definitely add clay soil. Basically any soil needs to be converted to loamy soil. You'll know it's loamy soil only when the soil is dry.

Adding organic fertilizers to the soil:  Whether the soil is clayey or sandy, both require a large amount of organic manure. At least one quarter of the compost should be mixed with normal soil. It will keep the soil bacteria active. If the soil is clayey or sandy, its amount should be increased. Half the amount of soil is good. Vermicompost is the best organic fertilizer. Homemade compost or cow dung rotted manure can also be added.

Mixture of chemical fertilizers: There should be a half drum for the roof and a 2 feet by 2 feet hole for the soil. Half a drum contains about 120 to 150 kg (3 to 4 bags) of soil. In both cases, 30 to 50 kg of organic manure, 120 to 150 g of TSP, 80 to 100 g (about 2 to 3 handfuls) of potash, 40 to 50 g (about 1.0 to 1.5 handfuls) of gypsum 0-151, G (about 1.5- 2.0 tsp) of boron and zinc fertilizers, mix it well and cover it for 15 days. After 15 days again mix the soil well and leave it open for few hours and plant the seedlings.

Soil treatment: Soil can be treated during soil preparation. For this, granular insecticides and fungicides of the Carbendazim group can be mixed with the above amount of soil at the rate of 10 grams (1.0-1.5 teaspoons). By doing this it will be possible to eliminate nematodes or worms and fungi.
Bioderma Solids organic pesticides can be applied in place of granular pesticides.

 In this case, Bioderma should be mixed at the rate of 1 to 2 grams per kg of vermicompost and kept for 15 days. After 15 days bioderma mixed vermicompost should be mixed with manure mixed soil.
In this way, an ideal floor can be created for roof garden boxes.

Benefits of Rooftop Gardening:

Oxygen is essential for our survival. Oxygen comes from plants. But there are not enough trees in Dhaka. Trees are being cut down for various reasons. On the other hand, roofs of a large number of buildings in Dhaka are lying bare. The number of trees can be increased by planting gardens on the roofs of these buildings.

Dhaka does not have enough trees to absorb the huge amount of carbon dioxide that thousands of factories and vehicles release into the air every day. So trees should be planted in large number of open roof areas in Dhaka. On the one hand, the balance of the environment will be protected due to the oxygen obtained from the trees through the roof garden, as well as the artificial shortage of vegetables, fruits and spices obtained from the roof garden will also be reduced.

There will be no fear of pesticides and formalin due to own roof garden. On the one hand, the heat of the house will be reduced through the roof garden, and the balance of the environment will also be protected. Therefore, the public should be informed about the benefits of roof gardens through advertising to protect the environment of the capital Dhaka.

Cultivation of vegetables in the roof garden:

Roof gardens are artificial green gardens planted in containers or drums. Anything done on the rooftops of residential, commercial or industrial establishments adds a new word to our vocabulary called urban agriculture. Starting rooftop farming is a good initiative. Although commercial production is not possible in most cases, this sector has gradually become important to meet the nutritional needs of households.

Growing vegetables in urban home gardens is no longer just a luxury but a family necessity. Vegetables are rich in nutrients that provide various essential nutrients to the human body. Edible vegetables contain water, sugars, calcium, iron, carotene, vitamin B-1, vitamin B-2, other minerals and nutrients. This article discusses in detail the management of vegetables that can be grown in rooftop gardens throughout the year.

Gourd:

 Gourds can be grown in rooftop gardens throughout the year. Hazari Gourd, Bari-4 Gourd, Dyna, High Green, Nice Green, Maina, Ronak, Super, Green Magic, Sultan, Nawab, Sharat, Badsha, Madhumati hybrid varieties are suitable for roof gardens. Small packets of seeds are now available from various companies for rooftop gardeners. However, hybrid varieties are more suitable for rooftop gardening.

The bean:

The best time to sow beans is July-August, but depending on the species, beans can be grown in rooftop gardens throughout the year. Bari 7 Bean, Bari Produced Perennial Purple Bean, BU 3 Bean, Ipsa 1 Bean, Ipsa 2 Bean can be cultivated throughout the year. But small varieties of beans are best suited for rooftop gardens.

Seedling preparation and planting: For making bean seedlings, the seeds should be soaked in water for 10 to 12 hours. After that, the seeds should be wrapped in a wet cloth/handkerchief and wait for the seeds to burst and the roots to emerge. Care should be taken that the cloth or handkerchief remains damp all the time. Once the seeds burst and roots emerge, they should be sown in pots/trays.

Generally the pot should be filled with soil mixed with half soil and half organic manure, 100g urea, 100g TSP, 100g MOP, 200g bone meal. 4 to 5 seeds should be sown in each pot. If the plants are a little big, three plants should be kept and the remaining plants should be removed.

Bitter Gourd:

Bitter gourd is a well-known vegetable in our country, cultivated in almost every rooftop garden. There are several varieties of high yielding bitter gourd in Bangladesh. Bari Karla-1 and BADC's Yard Karla are notable among these varieties. Apart from these, there are several hybrid varieties of Korla such as: Bulbuli, Tia, Tota, Kakali, Taj-88, Greenstar, Gaurab, Pride-1, Pride-2, Green Rocket, Hirak. , Manik, Jai, Raja, Prachi etc.

To make gourd plant, soak the seeds in water for 20-24 hours, wrap the seeds in a wet cloth/handkerchief and wait for roots to emerge. Make sure the cloth or tissue is still damp. Once the seeds burst and develop roots, they should be sown in pots/trays.

Usually the pot is filled with soil mixed with 100g urea, 100g TSP, 100g MOP and 200g bone meal. 4 to 5 seeds should be sown per pot. If the plants are a little big, three plants should be kept and the remaining plants should be removed.

Roof garden maintenance:

Since the production of roof or tub is limited to a small area, extra care and attention should be given during various maintenance. Special care is required when applying fertilizers. Because if the fertilizer is more or less or if it sticks to the tree, the plant will die, if the fertilizer is not enough, it will suffer from malnutrition.

In the case of trays, if small plants grow, the pot/tray needs to be changed and soaked in time. This gently rolls the old tank over the ground and the plant will come out of the tank. After cutting off the excess roots, change the soil and apply fertilizer and plant new plants.

At least once a year old soil should be changed and new soil should be enriched with organic fertilizers. Potting soil is recently available in the market. Buy quality soil and fill in trays, pots or barrels.
Plant seedlings, cuttings or seeds very carefully in containers or barrels. Right in the middle, you need to plant under the soil.

Care should be taken not to break the clods of soil attached to trees or fences. Seedlings or cuttings should be planted in the nursery or under the nursery or on the roof at ground level. Planting less or more than the seedbed will cause problems in plant growth. One of the many differences between growing vegetables on a rooftop and growing fruits and vegetables in the field is cleanliness.

Daily cleaning activities should be continued in the roof gardens. That is why old, diseased and aged stems and leaves should be carefully cut and stored in a specific place. This will keep the plants disease free and the yield will be good. Fertilizer should be applied to flowers and vegetables as needed.

 But in the case of fruits at least twice a year; Fertilizer should be applied carefully before and after monsoon.
Soil moisture should be checked at the time of fertilizer application. Because neither high humidity nor low humidity is suitable for fertilizer application. In special cases, some fertilizers must be mixed with water and sprinkled on the plants. Fertilizers are also very useful in this regard.

Due to the climate of our country, insect or disease attacks are frequent. In this case, be careful. If the roof garden is visited 2-3 times a day, the insect attack will be less and the yield will be better. Appropriate insecticides should be used at the right time in case of sudden and severe infestations.

In this article I talked only about the roof. But by following certain methods, plants can be easily planted indoors, stairs, balconies, verandas, cornices depending on the place, time and terrain.

Gardening on the roof does not damage the roof:

Excess water from the garden soil can damage the concrete on the roof. Weeds also grow on the roof, the roof floor is slippery and eroded. So whatever tree is woven and whatever method is used, a proper drainage plan must be in place.
